Saturday Spotlight - In So Many Words

This Saturday at Saturday Spotlight with Hidden Potential the challenge is to make a card using sentiments / wording as a main focus. Well, I saw THIS CARD by Shari Carroll a while ago and it was in my "I have to do this" file...so i knew exactly what I was going to do when I saw the challenge!! The sentiments come from a variety of Papertrey Ink stamp sets. Since they are clear, it makes them easy to use in this way. I simply took all of the sentiments I wanted to use and stuck them strategically to my grid acrylic block. Then I stamped with versamark and used white embossing powder on Kraft cardstock. The edges of the card were sponged with Walnut Stain ink (Ranger). I added a strip of holiday designer paper (Anna Griffin - my favorite holiday

paper) and some ribbon (Michaels). One tiny strip of green cardstock that matches the green ribbon and the card is finished!! I'm heading over to Saturday Spotlight to see all the other cards. Loonie Stamper's Challenge #64 - Copics

So I missed last week's Loonie Stampers Challenge, but I saw that Regan picked Copics so I wanted to jump in on this one! However, I have so very few Copics...only 20 plus the colorless blender. And, very few are shades of each other which is required to do all the great blending that the pros do!! That's because I bought a set ... If you are considering getting into Copics I would NOT recommend that you start with a set!! The problem is the smaller sets come with various colors but the brilliance of Copics is the blendability...but that is only possible if you have colors that are close in hue. Regardless, I do the best I can with what I have.

I decided to pull out Simple Little Things (anniversary set from Papertrey Ink, not available for purchase) and create a border with one of the circle stamps. I love this particular image and since I do have a few greens, figured I could do a little blending with those!! I started out by coloring the leaves Lemon Yellow, then adding about 3/4 of the Yellow Green, and finally justa small amoutn of Forest Green at the base. Then I blended with the Yellow Green and again with the Lemon Yellow. (Note- you can click on the picture to see it larger which will help seeing the blending). Finished off the rest of the image by adding Pink and more Yellow Green and Lemon Yellow.

Of course, I don't have any pink or green cardstock that matches these particular marker colors...but no fear, I just took some white cardstock and used my markers to get the right color!! I love doing that!!

I ended up with a long strip of the border and only used some of it so I cut out a few of the remaining circle images and crated a 3x3 card and a Scrapling card too. The sentiments are from Simple Little Things and Mixed Messages (both Papertrey Ink). I also used the dotted square border from Borders & Corners {square} also from Papertrey Ink.

Halloween Cards for 2009

Okay, so I love all those great Halloween stamps out there ... but I just don't make Halloween cards and I wouldn't do any home decore with them either ... so I've kept my stash rather limited. Just a few dollar stamps from Michaels is all I have. I do, however, like to make just 2 cards, for my boys (that's my husband and my son!). Because I don't have many Halloween stamps it forces me to be creative. This first card doesn't have any stamps on it!! The silhouettes are actually from a Halloween card my son received from his grandparents last year. I had saved it all this time :-) The ribbon is a sweet gift from Jessica (Hi Jessica!) that I have also had for a year...or maybe 2. The sentiment is from a package of stickers that came in that card from the grandparents - convenient! Just a bit of torn black paper at the top and we have a great halloween card. Next up is an image I got from a friend (by Doodle Factory). I colored it in with my Copic markers. When did green and purple become Halloween colors??? The papers are a gift from my friend Dawn (Hi Dawn if you are out there) - they are the Creative Memories Hallowen prints from last year! Very cool!! and the sentiment - well the 'happy' is from my Everyday Flexible Phrases set (retired from Stampin Up!) and the 'halloween' is made with Hero Arts alphabet stamps. A bit of creative cutting and another great halloween card. If you needed more inspiration, the Saturday Spotlight with Hidden Potential challenge site held a challenge a few weeks ago where Halloween cards were to be made without any Halloween stamps. Raspberry Fizz Ribbon

My co-worker gave me a present for my birthday a few years ago and it had this awesome ribbon tied around it. A number of months later, Papertrey Ink reseased the color Raspberry Fizz....and this ribbon was the exact same color!! I've been looking at it and wanting to do something with it...so I finally did.

I kept the card really Clean and Simple to show off that great ribbon.

Bold Bright Catterpillar

I found this awesome piece of polka dot scrap paper and then a piece of green cardstock that matched. I decided I wanted to work with some bold and bright colors so went to work creating a card.

As I was looking through my sets, I realized that I have not used this catterpillar yet and figured he would look great in bold colors! He is from the Pond Life (Papertrey Ink) set - there are some great images in that set!!

The rest of the card is stright forward!!

Old Witches Shoes

For anyone who has followed my blog over the last few years, you'll have seen these before. They are not new, I made them in 2007!! However, my dh asked me to order my Splitcoaststampers Gallery by views and this was the item in my gallery that has had the most views, 12003 to be precise, althought I noticed that there were 5 views added while I was typing up this post!!! Ha, you can tell it is halloween.

BasicGrey Color Challenge - Color Combo 2

I love BasicGrey paper - so much so that I tend to buy it and never use it. It is just so pretty to look at that I find it hard to actually cut up!! I know that is silly and makes no sense so I am determined to start using it. (Trouble is, now I buy 2 sheets - one to keep and one to use - crazyness!). Anyway, I was glad to see the BasicGrey Challenge Blog up and running again because it will make me start using all my beautiful paper (well, the "use it" sheet anyway *wink*).

So this challenge is a color combination - a nice blue, red, green combo - pretty easy!! I started out making these great circle embellishments with a bunch of different papers in the colors for the challenge. I punched the more decorative paper with a 1 1/2" circle punch and cut a scallop circle with the darker/solid color using my Nestabilities. Then, I cut a 1/2" circle out of the darker/solid colors too. I piled these all up on top of each other and added a button witha hemp knot on it (tip - to get my buttons to lay flat on the embellishments, I tied the hemp into a knot and then added them to the buttons with a half glue dot). Finally, I added my curved sentiment over each circle. One of the reasons I love acrylic stamps is the ability to make straight sentiments curved!!!

CAS 38 - Ways to Use Brads - Holly Brads

The latest Clean and Simple challenge over at SCS is#38 and Jen asked us to pull out our brads or eyelets and use it on a card.

It was all a bit of an accident - just walked by this stamped image. You see, I had taken this stamp and made a bunch of impressions using Twinkling H2Os last year but didn't use them all. I keep all my Christmas stuff in a seperate box so when I walked by thinking about how I would ever create a CAS card using brads....I saw this image and instantly knew what I would do!!!

I cut the image out making sure to emphasize the curvy corners. Then I put brads in where the holly berries are at. I adhered it to the card with dimensionals. Then came the tricky part, where to put the sentiment!!?? It ended up bottom center of the image. A few rounded corners and the card was finished!!

Happy Birthday Susan!!

Today is Susan Trask's Birthday - she is the owner of smARTworks stamps, a great little rubber stamp company that I happen to know *wink, wink*. Dina, our Design Team Leader, was on the ball and asked us to all create birthday cards for Susan to mail to her and post on her special day! This is exactly why Dina is our "leader" - she is good at getting us together!! Here is the card I created. It is not very original as many of you probably saw this one done by Jennifer McGuire. When I saw it I knew I

wanted to try out my Copic markers using one of the many great butterfly images by smARTworks. Unfortunately, I am rather limited in the Copics that I own (only 22 at this time) so I had to be rather creative at getting the rainbow effect! And I never use so much bling on one card...but for Susan, I went all out!! smART Word Challenge Oct. - FALL

If you've been following along on my blog you might have already heard that the smARTworks Design Team launched a new challenge blog called the smART Word Challenge blog. Each month there will be one word to be used as inspiration in creating. Once you have a card, just go to the original word post and link your card up with Mr. Linky! This month's word is "FALL" and here is my card. I started out by stamping these awesome leaves onto a piece of white cardstock. Then, using my newly purchased refills and an aqua painter I added various colors all over the page until I got the colors the way I liked them. Next, I stamped and cut out more leaves and colored them in with more colors. I then created my own text paper...it was easy, I just downloaded a bit of Wuthering Heights from an e-book, adjusted the text and color (brown) to what I wanted, and then printed it off. I adhered the leaves and tag with dimensionals. Finally, I adhered all this onto a Chocolate Chip card base and finished off the card with some home-made photo corners. I love all these colors in this card. Some of my favorite colors to use when creating!! You still have time to add your card in for the prizes that are up for grabs. Feathers

I love using real feathers on my cards. I was using a sentiment from the Birds of a Feather set (Papertrey Ink) the other day and realized that I had yet to use the bird nest in the set, even though it is one of my favorite images in the set. So I decided to pull it out and ink it up, finally.

Because it is a bird nest, I also decided to use some feathers on the card as my embellishment! I love using feathers as they are 'different' and can be soft like here or masculine like on THIS card.

For the blue panel I used my ruler and a Versamark pen and drew versamark lines. It gives a nice subtle background that doesn't take away from the more important stuff on the card.

Don't you just love that bird nest and those sweet little eggs in it!!

smARTworks - One Layer Addy Keeper

So the Clean and Simple challenge #37 over at SCS was to make a sympathy card.

This card is so simple!! It is one large image from smARTworks. It is supposed to be an "Addy Keeper" - you know, to stamp on envelopes to write an address in. But when I saw the 3 in THIS SET, I just knew they would be great on cards too!! (see, some days I can think outside the box!!).

I simply stamped it onto a white card base and painted it in using a paint brush and my Stampin' Up! ink pads and re-inkers (mostly used River Rock, Old Olive, and some Cameo Coral for hte ribbon).

Saturday Spotlight - Make a Scene

This week's challenge from the Saturday Spotlight blog was to Make a Scene. I pulled out one of my favorite sets, Of a Feather by Memory Box and got to work. I stamped the various trees onto a piece of white cardstock. Then I ripped some green scrap designer paper and added it as hills. I re-stamped the trunks over top of the hills. Then I added the sun and birds. I colored in the trees and red birds with Copic markers. The sky is colored with my chalks - haven't pulled them out for a long time. Might have to challenge myself to that next week!! I stamped the sentiment (Beyond Basic Borders by Papertrey Ink) and colored it with the same chalk but it looked so lonely and boring. So, I added one of the red birds to the letter 'o' and I boxed it in. Of course I had to go back and add a box around the main image!!! Loonie Stamper's Challenge - #62 - Holiday Elf

So Jewels picked some great colors and requested a Christmas theme project or card. That is great becuase I am in the middle of creation tons of Christmas cards. I haven't shown you any because I am saving them up for the weeks leading up to Christmas.

So, these are great colors: Dark Chocolate, Aqua Mist and I picked White to go with it.

I decided to go a bit of a different route and printed off one of Dustin Pike's Freebies - this cute little elf. Then I did some paper piecing with Aqua Mist paper and colored his shoes and face with Copic markers. For the white edging on his had and sleeves I used some dimensional fabric paint. Then I was stuck as to what to do for his big moustache and eyebrows. In the end, I used a light grey Prismacolor marker and also outlined him with the same.

For the rest of hte card I added some Dark Chocolate Bitty Dots paper, a bit of Aqua Mist twill (I am loving the PTI twill as it cuts so clean!!) and a holiday sentiment (from Everyday Classics, PTI).

Organization???

So my friend Susan was bragging about how organized her crafting room was. Well, I can show her pictures that would make her skin crawl...so I took some just for a good laugh!! On the top right is my stamp organization!! Hahaha - this is where I put my unmounted stamps....just in some photo boxes. Ooops, look that one on top just might fall off!! hehehe. Then there is my carry-all bag. I have all my scissors, rulers, hobby blades, brushes, sponges, dimensionals, adhesies, and everything else you might need all jammed in here. It sits on the top right side of my desk in easy reaching distance!! :-)

This next photo shows some of my inks...some Hero Arts, Papertrey Ink, all my blacks, versamark, cubes from Stampin' Up, Ranger distress inks (see them under the Hero Arts Color Box inks) and any other "odd" stamp pads go in this drawer. And here is the jar I put my bits and pieces of ribbon in -- Hahahaha, like I'd ever be able to find anything in there!!

Now, of course I only took photos of the most unorganized areas of my stamping room just to get Susan's skin crawling (her OCD is probably kicking in right now and she is purchasing her plane ticket to come here and help me organize my space - LOL). But truth be told, there are quite a few "organized" areas in my room too -- but they weren't nearly as much fun to show you !! Hahahaha!!

Remember - not only do you not need all the latest products to make great cards, I am convinced that you also don't really need to be all that organized!! Like Susan said "Stuff isn't nearly as important as imagination and determination" and I'd like to add that being organized isn't all that important either!!

CAS Square Blocks

This is a great way to use up left over scraps of designer paper. I simply punched 3 squares out of the designer paper and then adhered them to the white cardbase with dimensionals. Then I stamped the sentiment underneath. As long as you get everything lined up it is easy peasy!!! Three Trees of White

Check these out!! They are totally cased from Lucy!!

The little blue heart shaped rhinstones are from Cameldiva -- Hi Diane!!) The red 'apples' are half pearls colored with a Copic marker.

The white 'flowers' are flower gems from Heidi Swapp!! Love them - can't believe I used so many on one card...I am usually hoarder for that kind of stuff!!

I left sentiments off them but I did add a happy birthday sentiment to one after photographing it.

Supplies: Stamps - Father Knows Best (Papertrey Ink); Paper - Whisper White (Papertrey Ink), the brown is actually a light cardstock - it is the best color!! so I just used it like carstock.

Housewarming

My BIL and SIL and their 4 children have moved into a new home. And they are closer to us!! Yeah!! I created a gift for them and this is the card I made to go with it. This was my second attempt...the first one was going great but then the sentiment ended up crooked, even though I was using my Stamp-a-ma-jig ... gotta hate that!! This awesome birdhouse image is a trio image created by Dina and is sold by smARTworks. It is created by using 3 images on top of each other. There are also a bunch of different sentiments that fit with homes and new houses, including the one on the card. The post is hand drawn and colored to match the birdhouse. The grasses are different stamps from smARTworks. You can`t see it in the picture but there is some light blue sponged along the top edge of the card and green along the bottom. Clean and Simple (CAS) Challenge - 36 Thumping

The challenge for this week Jen asked us to use `thumping` on our Clean and Simple cards. Thumping? what?? She was nice enough to leave us a link Here. It looked like fun so I gave it a try!! Now, these cards don`t really live up to my CAS hero Susan ... there is way too much color with the designer paper (sorry all you other awesome CAS card makers out there ... I do love all your blogs and cards but Susan converted me first so she is my CAS hero!!). However, this is still a CAS card because it is simple in design, could be mass produced easily, and only took me a few minutes to create!! I did 2 cards using different images but the same layout.

So, don`t you love those images. They are great!! They are from smARTworks but you can`t just buy them...you have to earn them by getting enough smART Bucks!! But it is easy, because you earn smART Bucks by purchasing stamps from smARTworks. But there is another way to earn smART Bucks these days .... all you have to do is create a card for the smART Word Challenge (this month`s word is FALL) and if you use all smARTworks stamps in your creation you will receive 1 smART Buck!! Bonus!!

Saturday Spotlight - Dress Up Those Trees

I wanted to play this week at the Saturday Spotlight with Hidden Potential. Last week`s challenge was soooo much fun (It was to make a Halloween but you weren`t allowed to use halloween stamps ... see my card HERE).

This week the challenge was to Dress Up a Tree. I was tempted to pick the branch from Papertrey Ink (either Out on a Limb or Take a Bough) and dress it up for Christmas but I just wasn`t feeling Christmassy. Then I thought about some of my Stampin`Up! trees and even my smARTworks tree....but I`ve been playing with them recently. I wanted to use something different, one of my lesser used stamps. That`s when I saw my Of A Feather set from Memory Box. Perfect!!

So, how did I dress up my tree? I decided to dress up the leaves in some great fall colors using my Copic markers. It turned out even better than I had expected -- gotta love it when that happens.

The rest of the card is pretty straight forward. I love using these die cuts to create great shaped cards (see THIS one as another one of my examples).

Long / Tall Cards

I love working with different card sizes so one day I pulled out some business sized envelopes and got to work. I had been inspired to try the size because I saw that dashed line in the Of a Feather stamp set from Memory Box. I hadn`t used it yet and thought I could have a lot of fun with it. First, I paired it with the flowers from the With Sympathy set by Papertrey Ink and flower pot by smARTworks. The dashed line made for a fun stem!! I saw this particular sentiment from the Father Knows Best set from Papertrey Ink and knew I had to use it on the front of the card (it reads "you're someone to LOOK UP TO no matter how tall i"ve grown" - see how perfect it is)!! Next, I used the dashed line for what it was probably desinged ... the flight path of the little bird in the Of a Feather set. The sentiment for this second card comes from the Papertrey Ink set called Birds of a Feather. I love the little bling added for the letter i in Wings.

What a fun, fun, fun size to work with!! I might have to try this size again soon!!

Loonie Stamper's Challenge #61 - Thanksgiving Place Cards

While I try to play along with the Loonie girls I have missed the last few weeks. I have truely found it hard to get organized since being away for a week. But things are getting better so I made sure I found time to play this week. When I saw these colors I wasn't sure what I would do. The colors by Wendy totally screamed "fall" to me but how to pull them together. But then I had a great idea. You see, this weekend is Thanksgiving here in Canada (our growing season is much shorter than the U.S. -- our veggies would be frozen in the earth if we waited until Nov.!!). And I decided that these colors would make great place cards. I cheated a bit by using these leaves which have the right colors on them.... made by applying Twinkling H2Os onto watercolor paper. The names of my hubby and son are on the other 2 cards, just blurred out. They look great at the placesetting. We are eating turkey today since hubby has to work tomorrow...and he's the one who cooks so there would be no point waiting until tomorrow!! I am thankful for a great family, friends, and so much more. What are you thankful for?? One Layer Cards - Rub Ons

So yesterday I showed you a one layer card made by masking. Today, another one layer card but this time, I used rub-ons to help me out. This was a super simple card, thanks to the beautiful rub on by K&Co. I simply took a vanilla card base, adhered the rub on to the bottom and then stamped on the birthday sentiment. A bit of sponging around the edges for a little dimension. Supplies: Stamps - Birthday Basics (Papertrey Ink); Ink - Walnut Stain (Ranger); Paper - Very Vanilla (Stampin' Up!); Other - rub on (K&Co.), sponge applicator (Ranger). One Layer Card - Masking

Making one layer cards can be challenging but also a lot of fun. They are great to make because they can be easily mailed!! One easy way to create interesting one layer cards is by using MASKS!

I bought these masks from Tim Holtz' collection a few weeks ago. I was so excited to see that he has come out with some smaller ones that are easier to use on cards (don't get me wrong, I've seen some great stuff done with the larger ones, smaller is just easier).

I stared out with a white card base. I placed the masks where I wanted them and then using my brayer, covered the card with purple ink. Then, I sponged on some darker purple ink in the corner with the masks. I made sure to show lighter and darker spots of the sponging giving more dimension. After the masks were removed, I added a sentiment in black and some doodling around the card. I love this way of finishing off a card (as you can see in a few samples HERE and HERE).

Supplies: Stamps - Spiral Bouquet (Papertrey Ink); Ink - Lavendar Lace, Elegant Eggplant (Stampin' Up!); Paper - Whisper White (Stampin' Up!); Other - masks (Ranger), black marker (Zig), sponge.

Embellish Magazine - Circle Card Color Challenge

Have you checked out Embellish Magazine yet? You should pop over. They have had a few color challenges with the most amazing color combo's!! Really fresh combos and twists like polkadots and circles!! The most recent challenge is to use these colors and create a circle shaped card. These colors are NOT ones I would pick on my own {reminding myself that the whole idea of a challenge is to do something that is different}. This is the card I ended up with. It is definately growing on me. I folded the green textured cardstock and used my coluzzle to cut out the circle. Then I added the colored strips and sentiment. The butterfly is actually stamped onto acetate with StazOn, painted with a light green paint and then adhered to the card with a glue dot. The stitching and the butterfly trail are faux stitching!! Supplies: Stamps-Butterfly(Rubber Stampede), Beautiful Blooms (Papertrey Ink); Cardstock - mint green (Bazzill), Spring Rain, Select White (Papertrey Ink), brown (scrap); Ink - Chocolate Chip (Stampin' Up!), Jet Black (StazOn); Other - Coluzzle, acetate, paint and brush, Chocolate Chip marker (Stampin' Up!).
