Bookmark of my Boy

I have been thinking of making a bookmark like this for a while. It all started with the colors. I saw this awesome combo of orange and turquoise on a Nickelodeon commercial. Then, the background began by using some circles as masks and adding some stamping over that. The compass is embossed with copper, the colors are sponged on top of it, and finally it is cut out and adhered on top of the bookmark and picture. Supplies: Stamps-Father Knows Best (Papertrey Ink), Finest Flourishes (Stampin' Up!); Ink - Pumpkin Pie, Really Rust, Tempting Turquoise (Stampin' Up!), Walnut Stain Distress Ink (Ranger); Other - bookmark, tassel, 1 1/4" circle punch, 1" circle punch, copper embossing powder, sponges. smARTworks Tea Party #11 - Monochromatic Blues

Welcome to the smARTworks Tea Party!! This time Susan

was the one to set the challenge and something had inspired her to go with a monochromatic scheme!! I can't wait to drop into her blog to see what she's been up to!

For me, I decided to go with blues! You see, I have so much scrap in my craft room that I am really challenging myself to use up as much of it as I can. And since I have about 3 times more blue than anything else, I am trying to make blue cards!! :D

Every once in a while I like to make really Clean and Simple cards!! No frill, no splashy stuff, just good old stamps and paper!!

This is one of those cards. But I did use the faux watercolor technique. It is one of my favs!! You simple color the rubber image and then mist it with water and stamp onto cardstock. I like to use watercolor paper because the image is very intereting as it dries!! I used one of the many silhouettes in Susan's Cookie Plate and colored it using a blue marker. Once it was dried, I added a bit of blue stickles which you can kind of see in the second picture (if you click on it you should get a larger view). Added a sentiment and a few layers of various shades of blue....and voila, a clean and simple card!

Appreciation Friend!

More Scrap Cards - Chris' Scrap!

My friend Chris and I like to swap scraps from our scrap bin to see what we can make with each others' scraps!! If you are a regular reader, you might remember that last week I decided to go through my scrap bin and use up some of that delicious stuff. I guess it got Chris inspired because she decided to send me a bunch of her crap....oops, I mean scrap!! Looky what she sent!! (Hey Chris, I actually remembered to photograph the scrap before I started using it!!). I laughed out loud when I opened the package because inside I found this white scallop item. Hehehe, it is actually a drink coaster from a close by hotel .... and I have a matching pair in my own scrap bin!! Hahahaha!!!! Anyway....believe it or not, I made 6, SIX, six cards out of this stuff!! It was all so yummy that I just couldn't stop playing!!

Here are the first two cards. Well, actually they are called "scraplings". I saw this idea first from Shari Carroll. She uses the cutoff portion from turning regular A2 cards into square cards. There is a 1 1/2" portion that gets cut off and I love the size. Inchies fit perfectly onto it!! If you scroll down on THIS post, you will see another of my scrapling cards - the red velvet butterfly card.

Anyway, I decided to use the mult-polka dotted paper for these scraplings. I punched a bunch of 1" squares out, mounted them onto 1 1/4" squares of black cardstock and adheared them to the scraplings. Then, using Paptertrey Ink's Mixed Messages stamp set, I added some small sentiments. You can see them better in this close-up. I love these little scrapling cards!! My new fav size to work with!

Next up was to use these wonderfully masculine looking scraps. I decided to make a few 3x3 cards with this. As I searced through my stamps, I found these two images that felt masculine enough to go with the papers. Both images are from smARTwork sets and both sentiments are from Papertrey Ink. The little grasshopper is cut out...and let me tell you it took a while to get that done!! Sheesh!!

Next up I wanted to use the scallop circle (aka drink coaster LOL!). I decided to also use the lovely blue ribbon that was included with the package. I pulled out my Upsy Daisy set from Stampin' Up! because it was one of those "must haves" that I've barely used!! I decided that Pomegrante would go great with that blue and I like the results. I was going to put a border of pomegrante behind the inside focal circle but it was "too much" so, instead, I used the circle that I had cut out as a template to do my faux stitching around the scallop circle. :D Love it when things just go well!!

And last but not lease, I decided to use the last 2 itty bits of scrap - the orange and blue strips with polka dots in a different way. This card uses all scraps from Chris and my own scrap bin. the stitching is holding on a layer of clear plastic -- from on top of my PTI stamps...you know that piece that comes on top and we throw it away...don't do that any more!! Use it!! So, I grabbed some matching ribbon from my ribbon scrap jar and turned to the great Alli Miles for inspriation .. see her card HERE (ETA - I looked and looked and looked and couldn't find the post where Alli showed this card, so I've just added the picture of it. I was saved to my computer and then posted on this post so I hope I am not using bandwidth or whatever!! ). I layed out the scrap and ribbon, covered it with the clear plastic sheet and stitched it together using my sewing machine!! Then I added the doodle around the white piece (which was also in my scrap bin and added the sentiment and a big matching button!! I love the result!!

Love - CPS Sketch 102

This is the current CPS sketch #102. I decided to play along with the urging of Nichole Heady. Not sure what ... but if Nichole says to play along then I'm there!!! The sketch gave me the opportunity to create the last valentine I need to make, one for my husband. I started out making the designer paper for the heart. On a piece of vanilla cardstock I punched the fancy square shape from Alli Miles' Wedding Day stamp set sold by Papertrey Ink. Then, I punched out a heart! I then set to work adding my other elements...a little lace, some velvet black ribbon, and buttons! Have I mentioned how much I love buttons!! Well, I do. I found 3 that went well with the colors of the card. Of course I had to add some doodling around the red cardstock panel and the heart itself. It just makes an element feel "finished" to me...a bit of a signature element I guess.

Finished the card off with a lovely sentiment - "All things grow with love". I really like how the font for the word love is different. It really makes it stand out!! You Believed in Me - PTI sketch challenge

Yes, here is my second post for the day. I a tutorial on lining up circle punches earlier today so you should scroll down or click on the link if you want to see it!

This card is my PTI sketch challenge entry! On Nichole Heady's blog this morning she announced that she will be giving away every color and style of ribbon to one lucky person!! Can you imagine having all that delicious ribbon!! I sure can, so I hopped to getting this card made.

Nichole is so creative. Along with the challenge she announced that PTI will be carrying the cutest "Bitty Dot" paper...lovely tiny dots on all the wonderful PTI colors!! And new "bitty dot" ribbon. How lovely. So, she designed a "dot-to-dot" sketch. Hehehe, you had to print off the "puzzler" and finish the dot to dot to actually see the card layout!! What a girl!!

So, here is my card. I love the look of white craft ink on dark cardstock!! Yum !! And see that yellow strip with the butterflies...they were done with my Cuttlebug. I was laying in bed the other night ... thinking of crafting ... what, I'm supposed to be sleeping...sheesh!! Anyway, I was laying in bed and wondering if I could put my stencils through my cuttlebug. You know the kind, the gold light weight stencils that we buy from Stampin up and other companies...that are to be used with a hand held stylus and dry embossed, or like a sencil and colored in. Well, I tried this awesome butterfly stencil by Dreamweaver...and it worked!! I colored these butterflies with my white prismacolor pencil crayon to make the pop a bit more!!

The rest of the card is pretty straight forward. I'm crossing my fingers that all the ribbon will be mine!! LOL.

Quick Tutorial for Susan

So I uploaded my card last night for the PTI color challenge and this morning my blogging friend, Susan, asked me how I lined up the circles for my card. Funny how, while I was making the card, I contemplated doing a small tutorial....but figured you ladies had much better things to do with your time. But, for Susan, I'd do anything :-) So, here you go Susan!! I'd better see a card done using this on your SCS gallery soon!! LOL!!

First you will need the strip of cardstock that you want your circles to be on (I used blue like I did on my apple card), a piece of scrap cardstock (I used sahara sand), a circle punch - the size you want it (I used a 3/4" for my tutorial but my original card uses a 1 1/4" punch), and you will also want a centering ruler (I use a t!m holtz ruler - get one if you don't own one) or just a regular ruler, and some non-permanent adheasive (I use E-Z Runner and while it is permanent, I find that I can easily peel off the one little strip I use when doing this).

Step 1: Punch 3 circles from your scrap cardstock.

.Step 2: Using your ruler and non-permanent adheasive to adhear the circles onto the cardstock that you want to use on your card. Place the circles where you want them. .

Step 3: Now that your scrap circles are adheared, use the same punch and slide the cardstock into your punch. Make sure the opening for the punch is lined up around the scrap circle - - you can kinda feel when it gets in there!! Then punch each of the scrap circles out ... which also punches the blue cardstock at the exact place you want the circles to be!!

See -- you will have a blue and a sahara sand colored circle!! I use non-permanent adheasive because I will put these circles in my scrap bin and use them some time down the road. I told you I can't throw anything away...and this is why I end up with so much scrap!! LOL .

And in the end you have 3 scrap color circles and 3 blue circles. I use the non-perm. adheasive so I can put these little circles in my scrap bin and use them on another project. That is why my scrap bin is always so full!! LOL

There you go Susan....Go and create!!! I'll be watching :-)

I'll be posting again today. Nichole's newest challenge is to win all of the PTI ribbon. OMG where would I put it all???? I don't care....I want it all!! LOL

Thankful Apples!

If you haven't heard the news then you haven't been blogging in the right place!! Nichole Heady from Papertrey Trey Ink announced today on her blog that PTI will be selling multi-packs of the 2008 color cardstocks!! I am thrilled!! I've been holding off buying the cardstock because she had indicated earlier in the year that she would be doing this.

As well, she announced that she would be drawing for a special prize package....a year's supply of PTI cardstock!!! Are you kidding me??!! I am so excited!! And all you have to do to qualify is to participate in the first ever PTI color challenge. Nichole has been making some awesome "rainbow" cards using these colors:

They make an awesome color combination!! So I decided to take the opportunity to make thank you cards for my sons teachers...for the end of the year. I know, it is a bit early but my valentines are all finished...and I really liked the idea of using the apple punch!!

So, I took some of the red, yellow, and green and punched out these awesome apples. Then, I took a strip of the blue and punched circles in it. I added the sentiment in a matching blue ink and then adheared the blue and apples with dimensionals. You can see the "pop" here in this photo.

I put all of this on a picece of white cardstock and then adheared that to a blue card base. I really like the clean and simple feel of the end result.

Valentine Bag

Over on Nichole Heady's blog, she announced this morning that PTI will be at CHA in Florida this summer for customers to look, touch, feel, and buy PTI products!! How exciting is that??!! Too bad I won't be there...but she is also giving away a great PTI bag...with a $100.00 gift certificate inside!! And to be eligable for the prize she wanted us to decorate a bag.

So, I decided to decorate this valentine bag I am planning to use for my sweetie's gift!!

I cut a strip of Stamper's Select white cardstock quite wide. Then, I used my Trajan Monogram alphabet to stamp "LOVE" repeatedly across the cardstock. I drew a light pencil line so that it would all be straight! Then, one of my favorite things to do....I stamped the branch from Take a Bough and added little "heart flowers" on the branches. The heart is from Alli Miles' Wedding Day set. I like this heart for making these little flowers because they are "plump" LOL!!

The Gift of Rubber and the next Tea Party!

The gift of rubber....there is really no better gift for a stamper anyway !! And Susan, from smARTworks, gave her design team exactly such a gift! Look at these amazing images!! As soon as I opened the package and saw these wonderful silhouettes I knew exactly what I was going to create first! This card. And you've got to love when a card ends up exactly as you imagine it!! And it is really such an easy design, as long as you are good with a Stamp-a-ma-jig, you are good to go!! The good news is that you too can recieve these wonderful stamps. Loonie Stamper Challenge #25 - Birthday

This week it was Wendy's turn to set the Loonie Gal challenge and ...wow did she ever make a doozie!! Check out those colors. Individually, all very beautiful...but to put them all together was really hard for me!!

I don't own any of the new Raspberry Fizz color...but you know me, I am all about adapting. So, I went into paint and found a color that was as close to the Raspberry Fizz color as I could get. It worked!!

So, I started out with this first card. And while it was okay, it really wasn't making me very happy.

So, I gave it a second try and while it still isn't singing to me, I definately like it better than my first attempt!

smARTworks - Red Teapot with Lace

This card was so much fun to make. I started out by stamping the teapot image from Teapot Trio (smARTworks) onto watercolor paper and colored it in with a watercolor brush and ink from my ink pads. I matted it with some Buckaroo Blue cardstock, used my ticket corner punch, and added some doodling around the edges of the image (one of my favorite ways to "finish off" a focal image). I added some awesome lace and black organdy ribbon under the image and a little sentiment. Put some of this amazing designer paper from Basic Grey on top of the Very Vanilla card base. I really like how this card turned out!!

6th picture from 6th folder

Well, my PTI blogging friend Dee tagged me and it was such a cute idea I had to play along!! The tag was to find your 6th folder of pictures and pick your 6th picture in the folder. You were to display it on your blog and expain what the picture is about. Well, here is the 6th picture in my 6th folder. It is from July 07. It was Canada Day (that is July 1st if you are not aware of this) and we had been to the parade at a nearby town. We always pack a picnic and find somewhere fun to eat for lunch. That year we went to a local lake and my son built stuff with the washed up wood on the beach. It was a windy but warm day and we had a lot of fun!!

Now I am supposed to tag a few folks. I will tag a few here and some private tags via PMs. I am going to tag Chris, Juanita, Jessica, and Kelly. Hopefully they will all play!!

I am in create mode tonight and I ahve some stamping time tomorrow night so hopefully I will get some of my "to do" list accomplished!

smARTworks Tea Party #10 - Stitches and Ribbon

It is time again for another smARTworks Tea Party!! This time it was Giovana's time to give us a challenge! She wanted us to use stitching and ribbon on our cards. What fun! Now, we could use real stitching, faux stitching, or even rub-ons or stamps. I, however, love to pull out my sewing machine and do some sewing on my cards. I think they make cards warm and cozy!! A real home-spun feel. I stamped the small key from smARTworks' Lock and Key onto a piece of vanilla cardstock and then sponged on some creamy caramel and cut it out. Next, I stamped the sentiment onto a piece of designer paper. The sentimet reads "The keys to happiness Something to do. Something to love. Something to hope for." I then used a Post-It Note, cut out a heart shape and used the reverse mask to create the heart shape behind the sentiment. First, I used the HINGE stamp from the Lock and Key set to stamp the swirly image (stamping off the ink first so that it was lighter than the sentiment). Then I did a bit of sponging around the edge of the heart for some definition. I really like how this turned out! Finally, I stitched around all the edges and added the ribbon and button. Now you have to go check out what the other Design Team Members did with this challenge! Giovana, Dina, Susan (and Peggy too), and Trish. Scrap Cards - Lots of them!

I told you yesterday on my post that I would upload my various "scrap cards" today. Well, here they are!! I really had so much fun making all of these on Sunday afternoon. And EVERYTHING you see is from my many scrap bins!! All of the flowers and butterflies had been punched out before but never used!! Even the ovals, circles, and squares were pieces in my "little scraps" bin. The bits of ribbon also came from my ribbon bits and pieces jar.

While there is just too much here to step you through it all, I will point out a few of my favorite details.

See the triple panel butterfly "scrapling" - the black, vanilla, and red one. That one is one of my favorites. The butterflies were punched out shortly after Christmas from a Christmas card. The card had this awesome velvet-like stocking with a design. It made great velvet butterflies. I still have a few in my scrap bin so you'll see them in future cards for sure. The size "scrapling" is an idea I got from Shari Carroll. She uses the scrap you cut off of a standard A2 size card when you make it into a 4"x4" card. Brilliant!!

I also like the cluster of orange flowers on the vanilla oval. Those are "faux" primas!! I found some previously punched flowers, then using my embossing stylus and a soft mat, I pushed in one side of the petals, flipped them over and pushed in the center!! They are so much fun to make!! And if you look carefully at the background (the green part) you might be able to see some lines. I love the look. How did I do it?? I simple used my ruler and drew lines using my Versamark pen. Simple but provides a nice subtle background!! You can be sure that I'll be doing that one again!!

See the shimmery apple..well, that glittery apple actually came from a small piece of the glitter strip I had left over from THIS card. See, I really do keep everything! Anyway, I saw that it was just big enough to punch out the apple. I loved how the colors worked into the punch! Cool. The background was done with alcohol inks. My hubby liked this one best!

I also really like the orange, turquoise, and black collage looking one. The elements just fell out of the scrap bin onto my table close together. All I had to do is make some final arrangements and it took shape. See the tuele on the side... that is from Heidi Swapp and I love it. I bought it a while ago (probably like 2 years... ) and I had obviously cut some to use and must have changed my mind. Anyway, it was a scrap ... so on my card it went. It makes for a great "light" element when you need something for balance but you don't want anything too heavy!

Oh, and just one more tidbit. The pink butterflies on the brown circles, well they were punched out of some watercolor paper that I had painted (with watercolor paint...I think ... it was a while ago) and then I sprinkled coarse salt onto the paint while it dried. If you click on the picture to enlarge it, you will see some of the design on the paper. I had cut out a bunch of these butterflies from the paper.

While I could never list all the supplies (and probably don't have all the product info anyway), I will list some of the key ingredients. Scrap Card Fun - Again!!

If you follow my blog at all, you will know that a few friends and me like to mail crap....oops, I mean scraps to each other with a challenge to make the crap...ummmm, that is, the scrap into something beautiful!!!

Well, I recieved a little envelope in the mail last week...and inside was a wonderful group of scraps from Juanita!! I thought to myself "I must make sure I take a picture of these before I put them on a card"...but, like usual, forgot!! So, I'll tell you what she sent me. First, she sent me the piece of Summer Sun cardstock (it was plain), the small thin strip of white with yellow polka dots, and the scallop circle with the middle circle already cut out. Wasn't Juanita kind...these pieces were easy to put together!!

I started out by using clear embossing powder to add polka dots to the yellow cardstock. Then, I adheared this and the thin strip of white with yellow polka dots onto a white card base. Next, I added the scallop circle with dimensionals for some pop. In the middle, I added this awesome apple that I punched out of some cork cardstock (also on dimensionals)!! I finished the card off

with a small sentiment and some black organdy ribbon (my fav!). I really like this card!! And to think that it was created with a few pieces of scrap!!!! This is why I NEVER throw ANYTHING away!!

So, all this scrap use got my creative juices flowing and I looked over at my HUGE pile of scrap bits and pieces. I have one large clear bin (about 12 x 20") that I keep larger pieces of background, images, etc. inside. I also have a small oval shaped box that I keep tiny bits and pieces of scrap in...like punched circles, squares and other "shapes" that I don't end up using. And I also have a huge jar of bits of ribbon. With all that scrap sitting around, I knew I wanted to challenge myself to make some cards with them all. So, I created all Sunday afternoon and came up with 7 cards, with 2 more sitting on my desk to be put together. And every bit of it is from my scrap containers (except the bases, but even they are used from my half-piece or smaller cardstock pieces ... not one full sheet of paper was cut in the process!!). I was so excited to be using up some of my many scraps ... and I really like some of the end results!! I'll photograph them tonight and share them with you all tomorrow!!

Now, off to find a few scraps to send to Juanita....mmmm, to be kind or evil???!!! I think I'll be kind since she was so kind to me :-)
